The Somerset girls have done it again! Back in September, you may remember that our Somerset Junior ladies bowlers, known as the Scrumpies, including local girl, Chloe Holmes, from Norwest Bowls Club, came home triumphant from Leamington after winning the Amy Rose Competition.

Their path to the final was a tough one with one game played on what surely must have been the hottest day of the year, seeing the girls sweltering on the green but never giving up.

Despite strong opposition throughout the competition they won through to the Bowls England finals, beating Norfolk, in a really nail biting semi-final game in the morning and then going on in the afternoon to play and beat Hertfordshire in the final.

And now this great achievement has been recognised as they have been awarded the Bowls England ‘Team of the Year’ for 2021. Again they were up against some strong opposition from teams all over England and may I add, teams with many more years of experience under their belt. Brilliant achievement, girls!

This wasn’t Somerset Juniors’ only triumph: Steph Bramfield from Clevedon Bowls Club took the National Singles title as well as the Two Bowls Singles trophy and narrowly missed out in the Champion of Champions final.

Congratulations to you all and to the team manager, Celia Whitmarsh and her assistants for their fantastic support.

Well done, you Scrumpies. And it just goes to show lawn bowls isn’t just an old people’s game!
