They say that bowls is for the more mature person, but the Youth section of Purnell Indoor Bowls Club has proved that is not the case, with recent success in various bowls events.

Firstly, seventeen-year-old Sam Dart won the Somerset County School of Excellence Senior Section, recently held at Taunton Deane. This is an annual competition to assess the ability of the young bowlers of the county. Cameron Bowen and Jack Vine also took part in the junior section, coming in creditably at fifth and sixth.

Twelve-year-old Cameron Bowen, meanwhile, has been part of the Somerset squad for the National Under-18 Double Rink competition, and having won all their matches against Dorset, Wiltshire and Devon, they have qualified for the National Semi-Finals in Nottingham, in mid-March.

Sam, Cameron and Jack have also represented the county in several Under-25s matches and acquitted themselves very well. Successes that are not only due to the enthusiasm of the youngsters, but the excellent coaching provided by the club coach, Mel Bowen, and his team.

Saturday mornings at the club are set aside for the youth section, and are open to any youngster to come along and have a go from 10 a.m. onwards. Further details can be obtained through Don Dart: 01761 471019 or visit: purnellbowls.co.uk John Hansford
