Bloomfield Bowls Club held an open fun day at the club on Saturday in co-ordination with a Bowls England promotional weekend.

Bowls England, the governing body of Lawn Bowls, launched a country-wide “Big Roll Up” weekend to promote the sport.

There was a real party atmosphere at the club, with a free BBQ, lots of bowls games for children and the adults who took to the green were given coaching throughout the day – the event was attended by 60-70 people throughout.

A spokesman for Bloomfield said: “It’s wonderful to see so many people

enjoying themselves out in the sun and fresh air. This is a sport for everyone – for too many years, lawn bowls has been labelled as an old person’s pastime but things are changing rapidly – it is a recognised sport and features in the Commonwealth Games.

“We have recently recruited many new members at the club and with this drive we are looking to welcoming more people to Bloomfield.

“With our new and younger members we are bringing a fresh outlook and a younger vision to the club. The competition amongst the younger members is huge and we find generally that once a person has had a try out they are looking for more”. Fez Parker
