EVERY summer Camerton and Peasedown Croquet Club host several Level play tournaments for Golf Croquet. These are part of a national programme and the participants earn points which they accumulate through the summer and carry forward to the Nation Finals held later in the season.
In June it was the turn of the ‘D’ level group, who all hold handicaps of 10 or higher to play a full day on Camerton and Peasedown’s four stunningly beautiful lawns. There was good representation from the Bath, Bradford-on-Avon and Camerton and Peasedown clubs; others had travelled from Cornwall, Sussex, Oxfordshire and Somerset and several had lodged locally the previous night. The morning weather was perfect for being outdoors although some rain was forecast for later in the day.
The group were welcomed to CPCC by the tournament manager Nigel Wulko and they were introduced to the day’s referees, Brain Wilson and David Richards. They started play in the usual format of four groups where All- Played All; the top two from each group going forward to play for the trophy and the bottom two going forward to play for the ’plate’. This produced a ranking for the day and therefore the distribution of valuable points.
The top eight players who went forward to the knock-out finals included CPCC’s Ray Cohen who only started to play croquet in 2025, was playing in his first National tournament; a testament that croquet is an easy game to learn and there are opportunities, within the game, to progress quickly to play in competitions.
The event winner was Carole Gorvett from Bradford-on-Avon who narrowly beat her club companion Monica Baker 7 hoops to 6. The ‘plate’ competition was won by Angela Crofts from CPCC. There were additional prizes for some who had lost early in the day but who went on to play really well in the afternoon.
