A cracking advert for non-league football was served up at Winterfield Road for the crowd of 244, with a healthy number from Slough.
Welton started off the first half on full throttle and an early chance saw a deep cross from Steve Bridges, which found Connor Davies and his challenge on Carl Crabtree in the Warminster goal saw the keeper drop the ball and was booted clear by a defender. A long throw from Tom Smith found Ricky Scott in space and his curling shot flashed past the far post.
Further Welton pressure saw Captain, Chris Peck, beat his marker and he fired in a stunning shot that was palmed away by Crabtree at full stretch. Welton continued to press and were rewarded on forty minutes when a long ball out of defence was met by Rhys Cook in space and as keeper, Crabtree, rushed out to close him down, the youngster calmly slotted the ball over the keeper and watched it fly into the Warminster net to give Welton a deserved lead.
Welton continued to press early in the second half and efforts from Davies and Dan Cottle went close. There was controversy in the sixtieth minute, when Sam Babatunde for the visitors was found in space in the Welton area, he was immediately closed down and then fell over. The referee pointed to the penalty spot, much to the consternation of the Welton players and supporters. The referee then consulted his assistant, and following discusions, reversed his decision much to the relief of the Green Army. Welton Manager, Nick Beaverstock, then changed the forward line-up and substituted youngsters, Cook and Davies, with Mark Reynolds and Ben Harris. On the eightieth minute, Welton got a second, when Conradi was found on the right, he turned his marker and delivered a quality cross that was met by Reynolds, who made no mistake with his firmly-struck header. With minutes remaining, Warminster were reduced to ten men, when defender, Ty Pollard, was shown a straight red card for an awful tackle on Steve Bridges. On the full-time whistle, Welton made it three when good work from Peck saw his cross met by Cottle and he drilled his shot into the Warminster net.
First Team Manager, Nick Beaverstock, is pleased to announce that he has re-signed Steve Bridges from Larkhall Athletic. Bridges left Welton to join Larkhall a few seasons back and has played a big part in their promotion to the Southern League. However, he has suffered from injuries and decided to rejoin Welton with a view to regaining fitness. Nick Beaverstock commented: "It's great to have Bridgo back with us. He's had the experience of winning this league and winning promotion to the Southern League, that experience will be invaluable to us."
