SOMERSET Women’s cricket season came to a disappointing end when they were beaten by Surrey in their final Metro Bank One Day Cup fixture at the Oval..

Chasing Somerset’s total of 295 for 7 the Surrey final pair scored the winning run off the third ball of the final over to achieve a one wicket victory and assure that it was the London based side who progressed to the next stage of the competition.

At the start of the game after losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Niamh Holland hit 130 and Sophie Luff struck 108, the pair sharing a Somerset record third wicket stand of 196 as the visitors piled up 295 for seven.

The visitors lost Bex Odgers for 19 in the sixth over with the total on 24, and Emma Corney for 7 in the 11th on 45 both bowled by Sune Luus and Alice Monaghan respectively, before Luff and Holland took charge. Luff’s innings gained momentum when she creamed a couple of fours through the covers before pulling a full toss from Dani Gregory for four to reach 50.

Holland’s innings was more belligerent and chanceless until she reached three figures. A savage pull shot for six was the main highlight but the 21-year-old was quick to punish anything wide, cutting and driving the ball to the point fence. Post milestone she was dropped twice as wickets tumbled, but 19 from the final over set an imposing target.

When the home team responded Sophia Dunkley hit four early boundaries before she survived a life before Alex Griffiths bowled the England opener as she attempted a ramp shot. Rachel King similarly got a start only to fall lbw to Liv Barnes.

Monaghan and Luus threatened a rebuild, but the former’s cameo was cut short when she lofted a full toss down mid-wicket’s throat. Luus lofted a drive just short of the rope and swept Chloe Skelton for six as she reached 50 in 46 balls, but immediately after drinks Griffiths bowled Alice Davidson-Richards before taking the scalp of the former South African skipper.

Chathli and Franklin wrestled back the initiative but after reaching 50 Chathli was one of two wickets in an over for Skelton.

Griffiths then removed Franklin and Kalea Moore to complete Griffiths’ five-fer. With the tension mounting Coppack though claimed a vital four in the last over as Surrey snatched victory. Griffiths ended with 5 for 54 from her 10 overs, while Skelton had 2 for 61 also off 10.

This game brought the curtain down on Somerset Women’s season - their second as a Tier One county.

In 2025 Somerset struggled in all formats and particularly in T20, while this year they have been competitive in both T20 and 50 over cricket.

In the 50 over Metro Bank competition had they beaten Surrey they would have reached the play offs, while as it was they ended fifth, having won half of their 16 matches.

In the Vitality Blast Somerset ended sixth with 5 wins from their 12 games, while they reached the Finals Day in the T20 County Cup.

Somerset Women may not have won anything but they were competitive in all formats, and sown the seeds for an even better season in 27.
