SOMERSET’S Thomas Rew has made an impressive start to his tour of the West Indies with England Lions.
In the opening T20 at Basseterre, the 18 year old, who is captaining the Lions in their matches against West Indies A, won the toss and after putting the home side in saw them dismissed for 98 in 19.4 overs.
Pick of the bowlers was Naavya Sharma with 4-19 from four overs, and Scott Currie who ended with 3-11 off 3.4.
When the tourists replied they lost Ben McKinney to the second ball of the match after which the skipper was joined by Rehan Ahmed. Between them the second wicket pairing added 52 before Ahmed was out for 29 off 24 balls.
Rew was then joined by his brother James who stayed together to see the Lions to 101 without further loss in 10.1 overs.
Thomas ended unbeaten on 50 which he scored off 24 balls and which included 8 fours and one 6, while his older brother remained not out nine off 11 balls.
Another young Somerset player who has got off to a good start this winter is Fin Hill who is playing First Grade cricket down under for St George District.
The 20 year old, who missed virtually the whole of last season through injury, made 109 on his debut for the Sydney-based club against North Sydney.
Meanwhile, an Extraordinary General Meeting of Somerset County Cricket Club has been called for Wednesday, November 18, in the County Room at the Cooper Associates County Ground (7pm).
An EGM was originally due to take place on September 14 to appoint the new Chair of Somerset County Cricket Club. However, it had to be postponed and will now take place later this month.
