TEMPLE Cloud maintained their position at the top of the Somerset Division in the West of England Cricket League with a dominant eight-wicket victory over Shapwick and Polden, despite the match being heavily affected by rain.
The match at Shapwick was disrupted for over three hours due to persistent showers. Before the interruption, Temple Cloud’s bowlers had already taken firm control of the game. Shapwick and Polden were struggling at 13-4 after 9.3 overs, unable to cope with the accuracy and pressure of Temple Cloud’s attack.
When play resumed with a reduced number of overs, Shapwick and Polden failed to recover. They were eventually bowled out for just 49 runs. Leading the charge was Reece Croker, who delivered a brilliant spell, taking 4 wickets for just 8 runs in 4 overs. He was well supported by Gary Filer (2-5 from 5 overs), George Fox (2-6 from 5), and Dan Nolan (2-9 from 2.4), with all bowlers maintaining excellent discipline and control.
The rain delays meant that Temple Cloud were given a revised target of just 42 runs to win. Croker capped off a fine all-round performance by smashing an unbeaten 27 from just 11 balls. Dan Nolan joined him at the crease and contributed an explosive 12 not out off just 4 balls. Temple Cloud Midweek XI vs Bath Uni 3rds - Earlier in the week, Temple Cloud’s Midweek XI hosted Bath University 3rd XI on a beautiful evening at Farmborough Rec. Winning the toss, Temple Cloud chose to bat first.
Opening the innings were Hayne and K. Curtis, who rekindled their partnership from seasons past and took the opportunity for a nostalgic catch-up between overs. Hayne was the first to depart, but K. Curtis began building the innings steadily, supported well by the young Raisbeck.
Curtis crafted a well-paced 43, guiding the score to 80 after 12 overs. Contributions from I. Appleyard, M. Steads, and M. Curtis ensured Temple Cloud posted a competitive total of 110 from their allotted 20 overs.
In response, Bath Uni 3rd XI started brightly, playing some audacious and inventive shots that delighted the spectators. The Temple bowlers — Nathan Brooks, Tom Redwood, Max Curtis, and Alex Comer — initially struggled to make breakthroughs with the pink ball as Bath Uni raced to 80, helped by a couple of retirements.
Enter Ian Appleyard. His introduction to the attack proved decisive. In a remarkable spell, Appleyard claimed 5 wickets, turning the tide of the game. Bath Uni continued to play with great spirit, ensuring an enjoyable contest for all.
