This week saw the annual running of the Cyder Cup, a match between the various sections of Mendip Golf Club.

This year the trophy went to the Men’s Section who scored 202 points. Top scorers for the Men were Liam Robertson with 38 points and Nicholas Roberts with 36. The Juniors’ with 195 came second , top scorers were Ben Roberts with 41 points and Alec Roberts and Polly Jones with 33. The Ladies were third with 193 with Lyn Jones scoring 35 points, as did Ladies Captain Aimee Sawyer. Bringing up the rear on this occasion were the Seniors with 188 points with Tony George scoring 36 and John Brooksbank, Seniors Captain Robert Miller and Nick Inskip all contributing 33.

The Mid Week Stableford saw a fine round from Mike Lill who won Division 3 with 39 points, with Andy Griffiths second with 36 and Henry Banks third with 33. Ken Webster took the second Division with 35, Chris White was second with 34 after count back from John Ellis. Division One was won by Bryan Lewis with 33 after count back from David Jukes with Tom Rowland third with 30.

Nearest the Pin went to Craig Robertson.

A very successful Lady Captain’s Day saw excellent support for Lady Captain Aimee Sawyer. Theme of the day was ‘colour’ and the Ladies competing certainly took’s Aimee request to heart with a stunning array of costumes. Winner of the dress competition was Allison Rumming after a close vote. The competitors then enjoyed a fine high tea provided by Steve and his team. The team award went to Jan Padfield/Allison Kay/Julie Doyle. As is tradition there are individual cups played for on this day. The Optimists Cup was won by Vicky Hicks, The Gladys Shepherd Trophy by Lyn Jones and The Cooper Goblet was won by Edwina Willis.

The Ladies Alliance A Team visited Farrington for their last league fixture and unfortunately three of the top players were missing. They fell to a 3-11 defeat with a win from Lynne Vowles and a half from Chris Down, meaning that Mendip finished third in their division.

The Ladies played Wedmore in a friendly fixture. With heavy rain forecast it was decided to play the match over 9 holes. A good decision as shortly after the players returned to the Clubhouse, Mendip was hit with a deluge. Mendip won the match 4-1, wins coming from Ann Padley/Pauline Williams, Gina Howard/Eileen Masters, Caroline Simper/Alison Kay and Chris Williams/Sue Alcock .

The final of the Seniors Summer KO, the Harry Bowles Cup, took place with Chris Betenson beating the 2022 Seniors Captain Steve Davis. However, Steve had some consolation, winning the recent Somerset Seniors Stableford event held at Bath with 40 points, three clear of the second placed player.
