It was the last week of a very difficult season for the Mid-Somerset Football League.
Pensford and Clutton had their KO Cup Final postponed because of one of the Clutton players sustaining a serious leg injury in the last five minutes. Clutton were winning 2–1 at the time, but as the match had not been played to the full ninety minutes, it was declared null and void because of Somerset Junior Cup rules which the KO Cup is played under. A wonderful gesture by the Pensford club decided to give the game to their close rivals and the cup was handed over to the Clutton Captain on Thursday night at Mells by the league's Registration Secretary, Gary Smart.
The night didn't go well for Clutton, as they lost in the semi-final of the Charity Cup to a very good team on the night, Mells, 2–0. In the other semi-final, the young Chilcompton Reserves side overcame the experienced Pensford team, 4–2.
The final was played on Tunley's manicured pitch last Friday and the large crowd were certainly entertained by two very good footballing young teams. It was end-to-end from start to finish, Mells had the better chances in the first half but failed to take them. Midway through the second half, when it looked as if the game would go to penalties, Chilcompton were given a free kick twenty yards from goal. Up stepped young Jordon Turvey, who coolly placed the ball in the corner of the net, well away from the Mells goalkeeper. This was to be the only goal of the game, giving Chilcompton the Charity Cup, Mells' Barry Sanquest was named Man of the Match.
At the final whistle, Chairman Bryn Hawkins thanked his management committee for all the hard work they had put in during the worst season for wet weather the league had ever known and to get all league and cup games played with a referee appointed to every game was a testament to their dedication to the league. Dave Stiles, the league's Referees Appointment Secretary, presented the trophies to both teams as he did again on Saturday to the victorious Baltonsborough team who won 7–1 at Temple Reserves to give them the Third Division title, pushing Pensford Reserves into the runners-up position – what a way to finish, going to the last game.
