Fast fairways and ironed greens made the day a good test of golf and which saw an eagle two on the new seventeenth and three birdies on the new eighteenth. Winning with forty four points after countback were Gary Quin and his partner from Orchardleigh, just pipping Bill Chard and his guest from Farrington. In third place on forty three were Ian Hall and his Farrington guest.

Nearest the pin this week was won by Tom Black with Jenny Merrett on second and Peter Graham was third.

Forty four ladies played in the Bowmaker event which saw a win for Chairman of the Captains Committee, the always involved Nola Russell who was supported by Dee Garnsworthy, Jenny Merrett and Jo Espley with eighty one points. In second position came Lynn Cox, Hilary Rowdon, Sue Needham and Jinhee Page with seventy nine and Marian Speed, Caroline Simper, Val Dixon and Lynne Vowles were third with seventy four.

The Mixed Team visited Tidworth for their annual fixture and after a very close fought affair just went down 3-5. Wins came from Rob and Sue Needham, Tony Logan and Susi Rudkin with halves gained by Clive Copp and Pippa Brown and Alan and Pauline Williams.

In the latest round of Somerset Junior League events in the Category One section Ffion Richardson came fourth and in the Category Two section, Alexander Leonard with a splendid thiry nine points came second, Grant Jeffery was third with thirty five and Ben Roberts was ninth. This latest result means that Mendip have won the Eastern Division and now have to play the Western winners for the title of overall Champions. Well done to the youngsters and best of luck in the final.

Further success came when Mendip visited Burnham in the Somerset Junior KO quarter finals and came away with a 2-1 win. Well done to Junior Captain Tom Richardson and his sister Ffion supported by Sam Hughes, a great achievement on those difficult links.

The Seniors Avalon Team visited Mendip Springs and came a away with a fine victory 3-2. Wins came from John Ellis/Bryan Lewis, Simon Brand/Nigel Brokenshire and Simon Wynn/Gary Quin. This latest win leaves them 2nd in the League at this stage.

The Seniors Friendly Team visited Long Ashton and found the home team in good form and this coupled with lightening fast greens and deep thick rough, some not far off the sloping hard fairways, resulted in a 3-5 defeat. Wins however came from Martin Sutherland/John Cross and Steve Davis/John Stembridge with Bryan Lewis/Keith Beasley and Paul Ashman/David Pilbeam gaining halves.

The team then followed this with a visit to Cumberwell where they went down 2-5, with a win coming from Gary Quin/Mike Snaith and halves from Steve Davis/Rob Richardson and Alan Edwards/Nigel Cheshire. T Williams
