Midsomer Norton played host to the Bath side, Walcot, last Saturday with an aim to turn around their winless start to the season.

The home side started the game well and pressurised Walcot from Ben Taylor's kick-off, immediately regaining possession early on, but, unfortunately, handling errors in the wet condition prevented a try from being scored and Norton had to settle for three points from Tom Rideout's boot.

After the good, energetic early start, Norton's work rate dropped off and a mistake well in the visitors' territory allowed Walcot into the game. They scored a well-taken, breakaway try.

Throughout the first half, Norton showed what a good side they can be, but only in short periods. In one such period, Rob Fuller scored Norton's first try of the match. Captain Denning picked up from the base of a scrum and charged forward, the ball was quickly recycled from a ruck to the onrushing Tom Fear, the move was carried on by Dayne Swift and then Jamie Rose, who was eventually thwarted a metre short from the line. The ball was then fed to fly half, Ben Taylor, who managed to stay on his feet in contact and Fuller ripped the ball from Ben and peel off the side of the maul to score. Tom Rideout added the extras to move the home side into the lead. Unfortunately, Walcot scored a second try right at the end of the half to go into the half-break in the lead.

Midway through the second half, Walcot were first to break either of the defences and scored their third try of the game to extend their lead. With fifteen minutes to go, Norton's Captain, Denning, scored Norton's second try of the match from a line-out to get themselves back into the game. This was quickly followed by a penalty, converted by Rideout, moving the home side to within a score of taking the lead. With the game coming to a close and Norton intent on attacking from all phases of play, Walcot managed to break the Norton defence to score again. The match finished in the visitor's favour, 21–34.

This weekend, Norton are on the road again, travelling down to Wimborne, who lost 3–0 to Norton's local rivals, Frome, on Saturday.
