PAULTON Rovers grabbed another valuable point away to Portland United in South Division of the Southern League in mid-week, gaining a goalless draw in windy and cold conditions, writes Jon Green..
After missing a game the previous Saturday, Paulton were keen to get back into action.
In the first half, Rovers played against the wind and for twenty minutes stayed tight behind the ball as Portland made most of the running. The hosts created the first chance in the 11th minute, shooting wide from a shot outside the area.
After the tight start where they hadn’t been too pressured, Rovers began to get forward themselves and in the 26th minute, Brandon Bak sent Tyller Davis-Whitlock through. There was a lot to do still and the ball wouldn’t quite sit right for a shot.
Two minutes later, it was Chris Peck’s turn to set up Davis-Whitlock. The forward twisted and turned and got a shot away that flashed just wide.
Both teams threatened once more in that half but both shots were easy takes for the respective keepers.
The second half saw Rovers play with the wind and it showed. They had a great deal more possession and looked more threatening going forward. An early chance for Davis-Whitlock went just wide as he shot from a tight angle.
Despite the greater possession, Paulton could not quite get the clear cut chance they needed. Stan Jenkins, Brandon Bak and Tom Symons all had shots but either failed to hit the target or the shot was weak.
At the other end, Portland tested Archie Matthews a couple of times with one shot near the final whistle crashing into the side netting.
The wind certainly played a part in the game and made passing tricky. Arguably, it will be Paulton that went away happier as they gained another point from an away match.
