WELTON Rovers endured a punishing afternoon at West Clewes as Mendip Broadwalk claimed a convincing 4–0 victory in torrential rain and swirling wind in Division One of the Jewson League, writes Bob Allard.

Despite long spells of determined resistance, Welton were undone by two penalties, two sin‑bins and an injury that left them with nine players.

Both sides struggled to adapt to the conditions in the early stages. Jude Brown gathered Toby Sheppard’s skidding effort at the second attempt, before veteran defender Saracen Yates produced an excellent goal‑line clearance to deny Mickey Gough.

Welton responded positively, with Kieran Smith forcing a corner and then setting up Oliver Tucker, who unfortunately scooped his shot wide from a promising position.

The breakthrough came on the half‑hour when Bertie Lucas was tripped, prompting referee Thorne to award a penalty. Connor O’Toole converted confidently to give Mendip a half‑time lead.

With the wind behind them after the restart, Mendip struck again almost immediately. A corner from the left found Mason Dagger and he tapped home to double the advantage.

Brown then produced two outstanding saves to deny Lucas and Sheppard as the visitors pressed hard. Welton’s situation worsened when Yates was sin‑binned, though they still fashioned a rare flowing move that saw Nick Taylor turn in space before firing wide.

Injury compounded Welton’s problems when Yates was forced off, leaving the hosts down to ten men with all substitutes used. Mendip capitalised instantly, Dagger slotting home his second from close range.

Minutes later Taylor was sin‑binned, reducing Welton to nine. Another penalty followed after Lucas was sandwiched in the area, but Brown produced a superb diving save to deny Dagger his hat‑trick. Substitute Billy Hook added a fourth late on, though Welton almost snatched a consolation when Brian Holding’s thunderous strike crashed against the post.
