Paulton Rovers 2 Chesham United 0

Chesham might have an eye on the FA Cup trip to Bradford City, but Paulton secured their first league win of the season.

The visitors started well as Bruce Wilson’s free kick was headed wide by George

Fenton. Jordan Ricketts had Paulton’s first chance, then Kelvin Bossman responded with a great pass, which Dave Pearce was on the end of. Leon Jeanne brought a fine save from the Generals’ keeper, Shane Gore, as Rovers had a period of pressure. Not to be outdone, Paulton stopper, Ben John, pulled a point blank save from Bossman.

On 25 minutes, Toby Little hit a free kick against the foot of the post. Four minutes later, Jeanne won a corner on the left, which he crossed for Ricketts to chip in, flicked on by Sol Wheatley and on to Josh Morgan-Williams to toe poke home to give Paulton the lead.

Brad Wadkins headed wide for the visitors, looking certain to score from Bossman’s cross. Wadkins also had a chance on the restart and Rovers responded when Ricketts fired over. Ricketts made it 2–0 to Rovers after 59 minutes, fastening onto a through ball from Morgan-Williams and slotting past Gore. Jeanne hit a solid free kick which Gore turned around the post.

In the dying minute, Wheatley hit over the top from Paulton and substitue, Sam Young’s through for Chesham fired wide with the goal at his mercy.

This Saturday, Paulton Rovers visit Stratford Town, birthplace of William Shakespeare. In a special commentary broadcast for Somer Valley FM, Ian Nockolds and Paulton Press Officer, Tony Walsh, will be joined by Ian Wainwright, from the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Rovers will be looking to build upon the three points they secured at home against Chesham United last Saturday. The 2–0 victory, Paulton’s first of the season, came in only the second game of new manager, Tony Ricketts, tenure at Winterfield Road and saw Rovers rise one place off the bottom of the table.

Ian Nockolds said: “The game’s afoot: Follow your spirit and upon this charge. Cry ‘God for Tony, Paulton and Saint George!’ You can expect more from me like that on Saturday! On a serious note, the RSC has been doing some really interesting things with the Premier League’s Elite Coach Apprenticeship Scheme and I’ll make sure our listeners get to hear about that, along with the latest instalment of Paulton’s great escape, on Saturday."
