Timsbury Athletic maintained their challenge for the Somerset County League Division One East with a 2–0 home win against lowly Castle Cary. The home side squandered a number of clear chances, but were ultimately well deserved winners.

Timsbury made a positive start, and after Ellis Hancock had seen a header saved low down by Cary keeper, Matt Record, Lewis Blannin gave them the lead with a sixth minute header from Jack Nix’s corner.

The home side continued to move forward and both Hancock and the hard working Joe Parker were denied by Record. It was 24 minutes before the visitors threatened a response, when Neil Miller shot just over the top.

A dazzling run from Ebner Heatley for the home side saw his final shot easily saved by Record, and the keeper also deprived Blannin of a second goal after the nifty front runner had broken clear. It was almost the last incident for the keeper, who had to leave the pitch with injury to be replaced by centre-back, Chris Hibberd.

Jesse Bishop had a great chance to increase the home side’s lead straight after the interval, but headed wide from Heatley’s cross. Miller had a great opportunity to make Timsbury pay for their wastefulness, but shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

Blannin at last gave the home side some breathing space with a fine goal, beating off the challenge of several defenders before planting the ball past Hibberd. Leading goal scorer, Hancock, had a great chance to add to his season’s tally after more good work from Heatley, but his close range shot was blocked by Hibberd and the substitute custodian also kept out Heatley’s effort late on.
