WELTON Rovers’ elusive search for their first points of the season continued as they were beaten 3–0 at home by Wincanton Town in Division One of the Jewson League under floodlights in mid-week, writes Bob Allard.

Welton’s task was made more difficult when they fell behind after just eight minutes. A ball from the left was driven into the area and Welton goalkeeper Jude Brown appeared to have it covered at the near post, only to lose control as the ball juggled out of his grasp. It fell kindly to Wincanton striker Grady Critall, who reacted quickest to poke the ball home from close range.

They were fortunate not to fall further behind when Wincanton full-back James Barclay saw his effort from distance come back off the crossbar.

However, the visitors doubled their advantage on the half-hour mark. A flowing Wincanton attacking move opened up the Welton defence, and James Barclay finished it off in style, volleying into the roof of the net.

The second half began much more positively for the home side, with Welton taking the game to their opponents.. Their efforts appeared to have paid off in the 55th minute when they were awarded a penalty for handball. Harley Prior stepped up to take the spot-kick, but unfortunately sent his effort high over the crossbar.

Welton continued to push forward and went close when Brian Moding unleashed a 20-yard effort only for Nathan Ball to produce an excellent save.

Chris Pile then came close with a good effort that narrowly missed the post as Welton continued to search for a way back into the contest. But the game was finally put beyond Welton’s reach in the 60th minute. Another swift Wincanton counter-attack, again led by the impressive Critall, saw the ball crossed to an unmarked Jamie Irwin who netted the visitors’ third.
