WELTON Rovers suffered late heartbreak at West Clewes as Bitton claimed their first points of the season with a dramatic winner in the final minute of added time of a 4-3 thriller in Division One of the Jewson Western Football League.

With both sides searching for their opening result, the contest delivered a breathless, seven‑goal spectacle that swung repeatedly before Bitton’s stoppage‑time strike.

Welton signalled their intent inside the opening minute when Will Ford found himself well placed but scuffed his effort. Moments later, a short corner routine on the left paid off as the ball eventually reached Ben Wych, who lifted a superb chip into the far corner to give the hosts an early lead.

The advantage doubled on 16 minutes. Billy Ransome showed great determination on the right, riding a strong challenge before squaring for Ford, who drilled his finish into the Bitton net.

Bitton responded quickly. A corner from the left caused problems, and although Sam Thomson got a hand to the delivery, the ball spun awkwardly into the Welton net to reduce the deficit.

Welton restored their two‑goal cushion in the 23rd minute. Chris Pile’s powerful free‑kick from 25 yards was parried by Bitton keeper Teddy Maggs, but Ransome reacted fastest, firing into the empty net. Before the interval, Wych twice threatened to extend the lead, only for Maggs to produce two strong saves to keep Bitton in touch.

The visitors came out with purpose and pulled a goal back within minutes of the restart. Another corner from the left caused chaos inside the six‑yard box, and Welton were unable to clear before Lee Osgood forced the ball home.

Bitton continued to press, and Osgood went close again when his header from yet another corner struck the upright.

Welton captain Caelen Simpson relieved some pressure with a driving run down the left, but his effort flew over the bar. Maggs then produced a superb full‑stretch save to deny substitute Jakob Seviour, whose strike looked destined for the bottom corner.

The equaliser arrived in the 73rd minute—again from a set piece. A corner from the left found Osgood at the far post, and he headed home from close range to level the match.

With momentum firmly in Bitton’s favour, the visitors pushed for a winner. Despite Welton’s determined defending, the decisive moment arrived deep into added time. Another corner from the left was delivered into a crowded area, Osgood rose highest, and his header helped by a deflection found the net to seal Bitton’s dramatic victory and leave Welton wondering how the game had slipped away.

Next fixture Welton return to action on Saturday 15 August, kick off 3pm hosting Chipping Sodbury of the Hellenic League in the FA Vase.

Meanwhile, Longwell Green Sports maintained their 100 per cent start to the season in the first division of the Jewson League with a 2-1 away win over Keynsham Town.
