WELTON Rovers climbed off the bottom of the first division in the Jewson Western Football League with a commanding 3-0 victory away to Keynsham Town Reserves, completing a month’s double over their hosts with an aggregate score of 7–0, writes Bob Allard.
The match was one of only three in the division to survive the weather, thanks to Keynsham’s 3G surface.
A strong crowd at Crown Fields saw Welton deliver one of their most assured performances of the season .Welton started with purpose. Early pressure down the right from Will Ford produced a dangerous cross that narrowly evaded the onrushing Courtney Charles.
The breakthrough arrived after seven minutes when Matt Morris won possession on the left and delivered a precise cross for Aaron Seviour, who finished clinically from close range.
Keynsham responded through the lively Akram Abdullah, but Welton continued to dictate the tempo. Ford’s long‑range effort swerved just wide, while a 25‑yard strike from Keynsham captain Kyle Box was comfortably gathered by Will Hunter.
Welton’s confidence was evident, and Charles’ clever turn and lay‑off created another chance for Morris, whose first‑time effort drifted narrowly wide.
The second goal came just after the half‑hour mark. A cross from the right found Charles, who rose above his marker and intelligently headed the ball across to Ford. In space, Ford struck a superb effort that flew into the net, doubling Welton’s advantage.
Only the sharp reactions of keeper Archie Didcott prevented Seviour from adding a third before the interval, denying him twice — first with a strong palm to a goal‑bound shot, then with a fingertip save in a one‑on‑one.
Keynsham began the second half with intent, as Dennis Asante fired over from the right, but Welton’s back line remained composed. Charles then seized on a loose ball and drove into the area, only to hit the side netting.
Hunter was called upon to push away a fierce close‑range effort from Ben Cullen as the game opened up. Welton’s decisive third arrived in the 74th minute. A well‑rehearsed free‑kick routine on the left allowed Morris to deliver a powerful strike that Didcott could not hold, and full‑back Harry Cade reacted quickest to stab home his first goal for the club.
The goal settled any remaining nerves, and Welton managed the closing stages with maturity. Charles almost added a late fourth, denied only by a superb one‑handed save from Didcott.
This was an excellent collective display from Welton, and the travelling Green Army left Crown Fields in high spirits after a performance full of discipline, energy, and quality.
Welton return to West Clewes on Saturday, February 14, weather permitting, to host Wells City. Kick‑off 3pm. Wells are lying fifth in the table and are still very much in the race for promotion. Devizes Town still top the table and remain unbeaten after 23 games.
Welton are now second from bottom in the table, and trail the next placed side Cheddar by three points - but have three crucial games in hand.
Meanwhile, Paulton Rovers found themselves without a game when their rearranged Les Phillips Cup quarter-final tie against Ivybridge Town at The Winterfield Stadium on Saturday, February 7, was called off because of the atrocoous weather. It was the fourth time the tie has been called off.
