The Avalon League team played Stockwood Vale at home and secured a 4–1 win for Wells on a scorching day. There were wins from Glen Crocker and Malcolm Terry, 3&1, Grant Rogers and Colin Mantle, 4&2, Pascal Norman and Bob Lench, one up and Ian Burr and James Church one up.
Stand-in skipper, Andy Williams and Simon Jackson, didn’t fare so well, but a good outcome against a strong team.
Wells Stragglers hosted Saltford in dry, but slightly windy conditions. The result was a 4–1 win to Wells, with Bill McCullom and Gary Leigh coming in 3/2, Steve Heath and Adam Holliday 3/1, Terry Searle and Steve Porter 6/5 and John Hockey and Bill Levell, 3/2. The Captain, Terry Pearce, lost five balls on his own course and was no help to his partner, Richard Sheard, who manfully tried to beat the opposition.
The ups and downs of golf were particularly evident for Wells’ Seniors, as they managed both a comprehensive home win and a heavy away defeat in the same week! At home to Filton, they won 5–2, with wins for Peter Leverick and Colin Mantle, Glyn Hallett and Dave Waters (on debut), Mike Gee and Allan Bancroft, Club Captain,
Stuart Mann, and Richard Sheard, plus an inspired George White partnering Nick Wilson. However, 48 hours later, they went down 5–1, away at Long Sutton, with the only successful pairing being Dave Hayward and Chris Strickland.
In other Seniors’ news, Trevor Cook and Paul Hole won the Packer Cup in fine style.
The Ladies’ Alliance team played at home to Henbury, who brought a strong team. Glynis Slater brought in the two points for the home team.
The Nan Barber Trophy was played in perfect conditions with Diane Ramsay leading the way with nett 76. The runner-up was Chris Gee.
The mixed friendly played at Mendip Spring saw the Wells pairs struggle a little with the water hazards, with just one pair winning their match.
