This week saw the return to competitive golf for Wells’ Seniors, at long last.

As was to be expected more than seventy frustrated post-lockdown golfers took to the fairways for the first Medal of the year. The April Medal was played in arctic temperatures, but mercifully without the bitter North East wind that had been blowing for the days previously.

The winds of late meant that the course had dried out and was playing very short indeed. The conditions left the greens remarkably quick for the time of year, but a little variable and uneven due to the drying.

This seemed to affect a lot of the field, but by no means all!

In Division Two, Alan Elkins and Trev Jones shot very respectable nett scores of 68, but were entirely eclipsed by two magnificent performances.

John Chillington and John Moxon had nett 65s, with the former winning on countback.

In Division One, debutant Nick Poore, Nigel Pring, Dean Hamilton, Cliff Hopkins and Nick Wilson all had decent nett 70s. Neil Hawkins must have thought his nett 66 would prevail, but Colin Webber had other ideas. He shot nett 63 to win the competition in style.

A brilliant turnout in very cold conditions with some wonderful highlight performances.

Our Captains’ charity has had an excellent kick start with our mulligan incentive, which was well received and a good bit of fun.

As we had such a great response from the members, we decided to give out two prizes. The first name pulled out of the hat was Paul Lewer, with a second prize going to Ben Mallett. Congratulations!

Many thanks to Mike Magrath for his help setting up the idea and Nicola McLean for counting out the donations. We raised an excellent £387.54 for The Lawrence Centre in Wells.
