Mendip’s Avalon C Team have got themselves off to a good start in Division Six. Firstly, a home victory, 3.5–1.5 over Wedmore, with wins for Scott Butland/Philip Moores, Tom Lowe/Malcolm Srawley, C. Copp/Tony Logan and a halved match for Chris Butland/S. Book.
This was followed by a win with the same score against Mendip Spring, with wins again for the Butland/Moores partnership, Tom Lowe/Spencer Pocock, Ryan Sainsbury/Tony Logan, and with a half from L. Philips/Rob Richardson.
The Ladies’ Inter League Team had a fine win against Minehead, 6.5–0.5. There were wins for Anita Butcher, Libby Bellew, Mary Ainsworth, Nichola Croft, Mary Ware and Andrea Williams (w/o) and with a half from Hilary Rowdon.
The Seniors have had a busy run of matches. Away to Burnham and Berrow, they found the opposition too strong and went down to a heavy defeat with only Tony Taylor/Simon Atkinson registering a win.
Home to Clevedon was a different story, with Mendip registering a 5.5–1.5 victory with wins for Andy Frampton/Philip Moores, Bob Smallcombe/Martin Lambert, Henry Banks/Merlyn Saunders, Nigel Hill/Keith Gadsden, Jim Mallon/Peter Rumming and a half for David Pilbeam/John Stembridge. Then, when completing the reverse fixture with Clevedon, the scores were also reversed, with only Andy Frampton/Dick Ransley gaining a win and Seniors’ Captain, Henry Banks, playing with Norman Squire a half.
Finally, the Seniors had a close win against Worlebury, 3.5-1.5. This time, there were wins for Norman Squire/John Stembridge, Jim Mallon/Nigel Hill, Geoff Mosley/Michael Gardiner and a halved match from Henry Banks/Chris Alexander.
The Seniors’ Monthly Stableford again attracted an entry in excess of eighty players who enjoyed excellent playing conditions. Division One was won by John Padfield with a splendid 41 points with Alan Roper, second, with 39 and Alan Fussell, third, with 38. Division Two saw a win for Andy Griffiths with 37, beating Michael Clark on countback with John Richardson, third with 36. The Veterans’ Division was won by Michael Hawkins, with 35, with Roger Wickett second, with 31, beating Ted Brimble on countback. Ironically, the Vets’ Division was introduced this year to give a chance of a prize to the ‘older’ Seniors and yet Michael Clark and John Richardson, in the main prizes, both would have qualified for the Veterans’ Prizes!
Mendip’s annual Centenary match against fellow 1908 Club, Worlebury, was as ever, a most enjoyable occasion. 24 players a side, Mendip were led by Club Captain, Richard Jeffrey and they all found the Worlebury course in excellent order. Competitive, yet played in a most friendly manner, victory this year went to Worlebury.
Mendip’s Mixed Team entertained Taunton and Pickeridge, who brought a strong team resulting in a win for the visitors, 2–5.
Winning pairs for Mendip were Chris Williams/John Whyman and Sue and Rob Needham.
