The Wells Avalon team took on their local rivals at home on Saturday, finding a player at the last minute to complete the team.
In a very tight match, with three matches finishing on the eighteenth, Wells managed a pleasing 3–2 victory. The winning pairs were Simon Jackson and Pete Walker, Ian Burr and Steve Porter, with Mike Metcalfe and Malcolm and Glen Crocker with John Baker halving their matches.
Wells’ Senior Men played Kingsdown at Wells on a cold day, but this did not detract from enjoying the match. Kingsdown were the winners 5–2. Wells won one match and halved two. A Kingsdown member had an eagle on the par four ninth. His second shot from 130 yards rolled in.
Clevedon’s Senior Men visited Wells, who secured their first win of the season. Alan Elkins and Ron Davey had an excellent win (5–4) against strong opponents. Bill McCollum birdied the sixteenth to win his match with partner, Piers Dalby. Stu Meyrick, Clevedon, won the ‘nearest the pin in two’ on the par four fifteenth, when he holed his eight iron second shot.
The Ladies’ Alliance Match away at Shirehampton resulted in a victory for Wells – a good omen for the season. Those winning their matches were Glynis Slater, Sue Wells, Jill Bocquet, Erica Klim and Cath Levell.
The Ladies Interleague team gained some useful away match points in the first two matches of the season, with Jill Bocquet, Team Captain, leading the way.
The Ladies April Medal saw Glynis Slater win Division One and Silvia Gibbon win Division Two through sleet, hail and sunshine – all seasons in one game.
