The annual Hobby Horse match between the ladies and gentlemen of Wells Golf Club resulted in a surprise victory for the men. It was keenly contested, in a friendly manner, and leading the teams out were Club Captain, Erica Klim, and Doreen Douglas, doing battle with Club Captain Elect, Stuart Mann and Bill McCollum. This match was held to a draw.
In the following match, Ladies Vice-Captain, Tina Davies and Sue Hockey also achieved a half against their opponents, Seniors Captain, Dave Hayward and Mick Currell. After friendly results in the first two matches, the tide then began to turn in favour of the men, who won the remaining matches.
Mike McGrath and Alan Elkins beat Jen Jones and Rose Hallett on the eighteenth; George Davis and Mike Bailey beat Kim Lord and Cath Levell 4&3; Steve Bouquet and Glyn Hallett beat Sandy Heath and Gill McGrath 2&1. The overall result was a 4–1 win for the men.
The past Club Captains held their invitation day, which was full of memories, interesting golf and good food. The winners were Adrian Lawrence and Mark Winterskill with 45 points, followed by John Chillington and his partner, Nick Bye, second with 41 points. Club Captain, Erica Klim and her partner, Andrew Snell were third, with 39 points.
The Wells Stragglers played their last match of the season away to Mendip Springs. With water in the lakes and streams, aided by a heavenly top-up, it was time for Wells (even though our City name implies we are happy with water) to recognise that things were not in our favour. The result was a win for Mendip Springs by 3&2. Steve Porter and Philip Kenworthy lost 3–2, Steve Heath sadly lipped out on the eighteenth, achieving a half with his partner, Ken Ford, Terry Pearce (magnificent leader and Captain) with his partner, John Baker, won 4–3, Terry Searle and Gary Leigh lost 5–4, Richard Mansfield and Pete Michell achieved a very creditable half.
The September Men’s Medal results were – Division One: M. Western, nett 70, Division Two: S Porter, nett 71, Division Three: P. Kenworthy, nett 72.
