The Wells Men’s team travelled to Weston to play in the Somerset Bowl. The weather forecast was for atrocious winds and rain and the British summer did not disappoint.
Two strong teams faced each other with Weston fielding six category one players. Duncan Bratt and Malcolm Terry were first out and played brilliantly through the worst of the weather winning 4&3. Weston fought back quickly as Ashton Wylie and Ian Burr were eviscerated 9&7.
Simon Elliott and Darren Barnett played wonderfully well to win 7&5 and edge Wells in front.
Mike Metcalfe and Tom Snelling got the better of their low handicap clash with an excellent 4&2 win to put Wells ahead.
Last out Glen Crocker and Pascal Norman fought back from three down to take the match down the 18th but finally lost two down.
Thus Wells won a very tight fought contest 3–2 and progress to play either Minehead or Cricket St Thomas in the quarter final.
The Ladies Alliance team played at home against Filton and gained a fine win 10–4.
There were wins for Abby Gray 1 up, Glynis Slater 5&4, Tina Davies 2 up, Jill Bocquet 4&3 and Veronica Cherry 4&3.
Diane Ramsay won the Pamela Manuel Trophy with an excellent nett 71. Cath Levell followed closely behind in the medal round with nett 73 and Linda Wright was nett 74.
Visitors did well in the recent 4BBB Open with Sean Woodward and Mike Wright (Wheathill) coming in with 44 points. Second Visitors were Colin Price and Kevin Thorne (Upavon) 43 points on countback from Dave Harvey and Andy Coles (Farrington).
Home winners were Trevor Padfield and Ken Scadden with 45 points on countback from Martyn Pugh and John Sheppard.
