Farrington Park’s home players, Rob Chappell and Pete Maule, took the honours in another highly successful Farrington Park Seniors Open which attracted an entry of 116. Scoring was high from both home and visiting teams in the Four Ball Better Ball competition.
Players from several other clubs enjoyed the day and commented on the excellent condition of the course, although expectations were not high for the early starters as cloud and mist covered the course for the first two hours.
The winners scored 47 points, while Rob Thain and Tony Russell were just one shot behind, with Chris Standen and Barry Hall third on 45.
The leading visitors on 45 points were N. Tothill, from Minchinhampton, and J. Harvey, from Chipping Sodbury. Kendleshire pair, R. Preedy and D. Pike, returned 44 points with Wells players, C. Mantle and M. Barns third on 42. Many thanks to Jean Sage and Mary Hobbs for manning the desk, starter, Ray Vickers and to the many sponsors for their contributions on the day. A final thanks to stalwart, Chris Liberty, for ensuring the smooth running of the competition.
The Men’s Saturday Medal was played in difficult conditions and golf was a battle, but Huw Jones mastered the weather in Division One with a score of 81–68, followed by Lee Francis, 82–70. Darren Wilkins, was third with 81–71. Phil Bray, 87–71, topped the charts in Division Two with Trevor Dale, second, on 88–73 and Jon Brown, third, with 92 –76.
The Sunday Stableford was played in more favourable conditions. Steve Kingman claimed Division One with 38 points, followed by Mike Hogg on 36 points and Lee Sparkes third on 35 points.
Andrew Sheppard enjoyed a good day by notching 39 points in Division Two, followed by Paul Goddard on 34 points, beating Alastair Huckle on countback.
