After incessant rain at the beginning of the week, Mendip Golf Club’s course had dried out extremely well and competitors in the latest Turkey Trot event were faced with excellent playing conditions.
56 pairs played in the Four Ball Better Ball event which eventually resulted in a very close finish. In third place, with 42 points and losing out on countback, were Steve Pearson and John Harvey, leaving, in second place, Richard Salter and Chris Lindley. However, with 43 points and therefore winning by a single point, were Phil Butcher and his partner, G. Haddock.
Mendip Golf Club is very fortunate that enthusiastic members, David Pilbeam and Ray Smith, together with Andy Jones of Tee Time Catering, have reformed the Social Committee and they have now been joined by new member this year, Rob Richardson. They have been overwhelmed by the support they have received. After their first event was a sell out, this was followed by an Italian evening, again sold out.
They went into their latest venture with a little apprehension, this being a nine-hole golf competition followed by a ‘High Tea and Prosecco’ and a concert. They need not have worried. Forty players took part in the golf, held on a cold yet dry day and a further forty-plus came just for the high tea and music. The String Quartet, a local group called ‘Primavera’, were outstanding, as were the scones made by Sharon and Anne-Marie! All in all, a highly successful event. The golf, played in Four Ball Better Ball format, saw Chris Olds and Joan Clark win the Ladies’ prize with 19 points, Nigel Brokenshire and Martin Wilkins, the Men’s with 23 points. In the Mixed, Terry and Nola Russell scored 23, but were pipped by an outstanding 25 points from Peter and Allison Rumming.
Looking to 2017, all the Open events have now been finalised and entries are being accepted. For full details, visit Mendip Golf Club’s website. Under the ‘What’s On’ button full details are shown with the ability to book online to secure your preferred tee time, or you can submit a manual entry if you so prefer.
