As I write this Mendip is covered with the first snow of the winter, a lovely sight but not much good for playing. However, competitive golf has continued well into December.

The Ladies swapped golf for their annual Christmas lunch with 60 attending. An excellent meal and a little homemade entertainment compiled by Lady Captain Allison Rumming added to the occasion and the last of the revellers eventually left the Clubhouse after 6pm!

The Pro Shop organised a qualifying Stableford which attracted 60 entrants. Chris White was third with 37 points beating Shaun Rich and Joe Reilly on countback. Paul Merrett made a welcome return to the frame to finish second with 38 but the clear winner was Cameron Elliott, playing off 19 who carded an excellent 43 points. Cameron had 2 x 4 pointers in the first 4 holes and finished the front 9 with an eagle 3 for 5 points! Well done Cameron.

79 Seniors competed in the Seniors Turkey Trot Shotgun Start event. 4 Competitors managed to better par with Nick Inskip finishing 4th with 37 points losing out to Martin Wilkins on count back. Again there was a tie for 1st place with 38 points with Phil Bendall just missing out to the overall Winner the evergreen Selwyn Rees who now well into his 80’s manages to remain competitive and in fact still able to play most days.

Congratulations Selwyn on both counts.

It just leaves me to wish everyone a happy and joyful end to 2022 and let us all hope for a successful 2023 with good health, lots of happiness and a successful year of golfing achievements. Tony Williams
