The Saturday Stableford was played on 16th January.
It is great to be reporting on competition golf once again at Farrington Park after the terrible wet weather over the last month. Some great scoring was still achieved with Matt Lefeurve topping Division 1 with an excellent 42 points followed closely by Phil Howells in second on 41 points and Gary Prater taking third with 38 points. An outstanding score of 43 points from Clive Perry topped Division 2 with Nigel Kingman in second with 39 points beating Neil Morgan into third on countback.
The Sunday Stableford took place on 17th January. With cold and wet conditions not helping, it was close at the top of Division 1 with Steve Coles on top spot with 38 points beating Andy Coles on countback into second with Lee Sparkes taking third with 37 points. In Division 2, Paul Goddard took the honours with 36 points beating Stuart Howe into second on count back with Des Deane in the prizes in third with 32 points.
Ladies
41 ladies arrived to enjoy a fun game of golf on Thursday, 21st January, hoping the weather would hold long enough to get around the course dry!
Bobby Appleby waited in the clubhouse to take entry fees and give out cards and answer a few questions about the format of the competition called ‘MeToo!’ The game was similar to a Texas scramble but, depending on your handicap, how many ‘MeToos’ each player received and could use to better their ball’s position on the course. Players with handicaps of 0–10 received four MeToos, handicap 11–20, six, handicap 21–30, eight and handicap 31–36 received ten.
This was a three team competition of full handicap with all three scores to count. Players all played their shots and then were allowed to move their ball to a fellow player’s position if that was better. It certainly got the ladies’ brains working on the course!
Bobby decided to make the competition a thirteen hole competition, hoping the ladies would be in before the advertised rain arrived.
Before the presentation, the ladies sang Happy Birthday to Betty Beadle on arriving at the grand age of 86, amazing. Betty was still ‘quipping’ with the ladies on what she was up to later that evening, playing skittles and then going home to her husband of many, many years.
The results were announced: third place, with 78 points were Pat Roscow, Pauline Young and Maureen Charlton. Second, with 88 points, were Terri O’Shea, Lin Papas and Lo Dallocco and in first place, with 92 points, were Laura Fox, Carol Jones and Sandra Hares.
A good day had by all!
Seniors
Dean Martin sang Baby it’s Cold Outside, bitterly cold and frosty, but the hardy seniors of Farrington Park braved the elements dressed more like Arctic explorers. Creative thinking was the buzz word with many golf shots not an option due to frozen greens. The farmer’s field at the back of the 12th green will be testament to that! Despite the conditions, scoring was surprisingly good.
