The Wee Wonders grand final was held in St Andrews on the weekend of 26th and 27th of August. Farrington Park had eight juniors representing the club and did themselves proud in the way they conducted themselves on and off the golf courses.
Alex Marshall, Frankie Dezis and Caleb Wickham played the eighteen hole, par 69, Strathtyrum course and Libbie Dezis, Abbie Moore, Lili Marshall, Oliver Barlass and Harley Wickham played the nine hole, par 30, Balgove course.
The competition was very strong, but the Orange Army played really well, notably Alex Marshall, finishing fifth, in the 11-12 boys category, Frankie Dezis eighteenth, in the girls 11-12 category and Libbie Dezis, fourteenth, in the girls 9-10 category. The experience of playing at the home of golf was great for the memory bank and has further inspired these juniors to continue working on their exceptional standard of play.
Farrington Park Ladies
It was Marathon Day, on 22nd August, for Ladies’ Captain, Pauline Young and Mandy Hobbs. Pauline and Mandy began 54 holes (three rounds of golf) at 6.45 a.m. on a John Keats morning of ‘Autumn mists and mellow fruitfulness’ and completed the endurance test after a speedy nine hours of golf in glorious sunshine, with only two twenty minute breaks. The day almost had a disastrous start for Pauline, whose first tee shot flew off left in the mist, bounced on the cart path causing the very alert greenkeeper, who was watching proceedings, to duck in time and avoid the white rounded missile. Once the golf was underway, no such wayward shots were seen again, as helpers June Symonds and Liz Thomas in buggies, whose role was to clear the way of slower golfers, remarked that the golf from the tenacious duo was superb. Pauline and Mandy kept their promise and putted out on all 54 holes, and raised £665 for Pauline’s Ladies’ Captain’s Charity, the RSPCA. Pauline would like to give a heartfelt thanks to all who sponsored the event.
With many ladies venturing off to Opens, only a small field entered the Daily Mail Foursomes qualifier on Ladies’ Thursday morning, on 31st August. The Daily Mail Foursomes is a National event that has over 1500 teams from England, Scotland and Wales, competing in a knockout competition. The winning pair of Liz Thomas and Pauline Brixey romped home with an excellent nett score of 72 points from second place Pauline Young and Linda Rogers with 84 points on count back. Pauline Brixey and Liz Thomas will represent Farrington Park next year in the prestigious competition.
