The Farrington Park Senior Section was back to its full complement following the return from Marbella of 28 of our golfers.

The first qualifying Stableford competition of the year was played from the green tees. The early starters contended with a heavy dew and sandy greens following the recent hollow tining and sanding. However, warm temperatures were compensation enough for the tricky conditions.

Division One winner, Steve Hobbs, has quickly settled into retirement mode with another fine display, netting forty points with nine pairs and two birdies. In Division Two, last year’s Captain, Ray Guthrie, had a fine round with 38 points, and in Division Three, new to the Seniors was Jason Daniels with 33 points.

Nearest the Pins: 5th – Ham Ridene, 8th – Mike Woodward, 14th and 15th – Steve Ball.

On what was a dull and drab day, ten Coppers ladies took part in the Novice Cup on Farrington Park’s Manor Course on Tuesday, 16th April.

This competition, played as a Medal, is for Ladies with a handicap between 35 and 54, and also ladies without a handicap.

For several of the Coppers it was the first time that they had played in a competition, but after some initial trepidation they all seemed to enjoy the experience. All of the ladies played extremely well but the winners were: 1st – Michelle Young, 2nd – Sue Garrett, 3rd – Jane Tucker.

Thank you to Margaret Seery, Jackie Walker and Gail Proctor for their help on the day.

On Saturday, 13th April, it was the turn of the Saturday golfers, of Farrington Golf’s Men’s section, to apply their skills, playing in a medal competition; the true test of golf. In Division One, Jackson Carey had a great day showing the way to his more senior players, scoring 80/72. Club captain, Gary Prater was second, with 85/73 and Eric Hogg was third, with 89/76.

An excellent round from Jeff Bruton of 86/71 took the honours in Division Two, with second place going to Dave Collins, with 96/72 and Mike Godwin 89/74, for third.

In sunny conditions, some high scoring was achieved in the Sunday Stableford, especially in Division One, where Martin Thatcher was top of the charts, with 40 points, closely followed by Jamie Lake (39) and Jack Cook (37) in third place.

Nick Russell was first in Division Two, with 35 points, Simon Kidd (34), took second place, one point better than third placed, Richard Hayes.
