The second competition of the Ladies’ golfing season 2018/19 is the ever-popular Tree Trophy, a qualifying Stableford.
A large field of 52 Ladies were tempted onto the Duchy course by the fine Autumn weather, probably the last good day before the promised winter weather blew in from the north at the end of the week.
Although only one lady played below-par, there were good scores from the rest of the field, with 23 ladies scoring thirty points or more. Pauline Young found that “rare bird of a score”, when she had an eagle-three on the par-five 18th hole. There were five two-spot birdies, from Maureen Goodsir at the 5th and Gail Proctor, Lo Dallocco, Peggy Edwards and Pauline Young at the 15th.
Wendy Butt played to her par, scoring 36 points to take second place. Countback had to be employed to sort out third place after five ladies scored 35 points each. Terri O’Shea won that battle, edging out Clare Salter, Gail Proctor, Corrina Bates and Lena Warren.
The round of the day came from new lady member, Evie Thatcher. Evie started the day on a handicap of 23. However, her brilliant round of 45 points, which included nine pars, meant she not only won the Tree Trophy, but had her handicap reduced to eighteen.
Captain, Pat Roscoe, had to promise Evie that she would present the trophy to her at a later date, because the actual trophy was at the engravers! As a substitute trophy, Evie received an appropriately large bunch of leafy twigs!
