The Daily Mail Foursomes is a nationwide golf competition run by the aforementioned newspaper. Now in its 55th year, over 190,000 amateur golfers enter annually, hoping to represent their golf club at the Final, which is held at a prestigious golfing venue each October.

Eleven pairs of Farrington Park Ladies entered the competition’s qualifying round, eager to see if they could get through to the first round proper to represent their club in 2020. Each pair had to play off a joint 50% handicap, playing alternate shots using one ball. One two-spot birdie was recorded by Jackie Walker and Gail Proctor at the par-three 5th hole.

As some of the pairs had not played together before using the Foursomes format, scoring was low but close. Lo Dallocco and Angela Hudd scored 33 points to take second place ahead of Shar Bradshaw and Wendy Butt, who scored 30 points.

The winners, Maureen Charlton and Pauline Young playing off a joint handicap of 14; birdied the par-five 18th hole to snatch victory by one point. This win was especially sweet because the pair had been due to represent Farrington Park in a previous year’s competition, but had had to withdraw due to illness. Maureen and Pauline will now progress to the next round and await to hear who they will be playing.

In the weekly qualifying Stableford competitions, Carol Jones had a fine round, scoring 37 points and earning a handicap cut. Carol was three points clear of her nearest challenger, Lena Warren, and third-placed June Symonds, who scored 33 points.

Scoring was low in the Saturday Stableford, the weather was very hot and playing was exhausting for the competitors. Wendy Butt beat Sue Forshaw on countback after both scored 32 points in Division One. Paula Chivers was third with 29. Elaine Davidson topped Division Two with the same score.
