The AGM Salver is the last competition of the Farrington Park Ladies’ golfing season, always held on the Thursday morning before the evening of the Annual General Meeting.

A large field of 41 players competed in the Qualifying Stableford competition on an autumn day which threatened rain that, thankfully, did not arrive. Previous days had seen the Duchy course receive a heavy soaking, and with winter rules not yet in play, the course played “long”. Mud on the ball and a ball resting in a muddy deep divot does not equal happy golf!

The strength and depth of the Farrington Ladies’

Section showed a wide range of handicaps on display, ranging from eleven to 42. Nobody played to par, but ten Ladies managed to score 30 points or more, which given the wet ground conditions and a gusty 20mph wind, was very creditable. No two-spot birdies were made, but the top three players all made birdie-four at the par-five 18th hole.

Five points separated the top seven places; Carol King took seventh place on countback from Jane Ball, Lena Warren and Maureen Charlton after all scored 30 points. Angela Hudd’s 32 points was fourth on countback ahead of Pauline Young and Clare Salter. Sole second and third places went to Sandra Hares and Gail Proctor, respectively, with scores of 34 and 33. The winner of the AGM Salver with a fine 35 points including the final flourish of a birdie on the 18th hole was Fiona Hassard.
