22 pairs of Ladies competed for the Ahlberg Assiette at Farrington Park on last Thursday.
The competition was a Four Ball Better Ball Stableford off a 90% handicap. Ladies with a wide-range of handicaps took part and it was gratifying to see that the winners were evenly spread amongst Ladies new to golf and more seasoned campaigners.
After a week when heavy downpours of rain and gale-force winds had made August seem more like November, the Ladies were lucky to play in dry weather, although the 15mph winds did blow rather too strongly for most players’ liking.
Only two two-spot birdies were recorded, both at the par-three 5th hole by Rosi Brown and Lena Warren. Although scoring wasn’t high, no doubt due to the windy conditions, countback had to be employed to decide four of the six winning places.
Rookies, Issey Panton and Denise Baker, secured fifth place on countback from June Symonds and Clare Salter, after both teams scored 31 points. Wendy Butt and Lin Papas’ score of 34 points gave them fourth place.
Two pairs scored 35 points, so countback was used again to separate them; the pairing of “new to golf” Christine Jukes and Marilyn Cole took second place, just edging Lena Warren and Rosi Brown into third.
The winners, one point clear of the field with 36 points, was the pairing of the ‘Janes’, mesdames Waller and Ball, who were delighted to receive the Ahlberg Assiette from Captain, Pat Roscow.
