The Trubody Trophy is always a popular event on the Farrington Park Mixed Section golfing calendar, with a record entry of 48 players from the Ladies and Senior Men’s sections.
The format was Greensomes Stableford and the pairings were randomly drawn by the Mixed Section organisers – some very interesting and strong pairings emerged from the draw.
There were two Nearest the Pin Competitions to test the players on a day of overcast skies and a light but cool wind, just perfect for good scoring. And what good scoring!
Out of the 24 teams, eight pairings scored over 41 points and countback had to be employed to decide second and third places.
Winner of the Nearest the Pin for the Men on the fifth hole was Alan Nash. Winner of Nearest the Pin on the 15th for the Ladies proved costly for Adrian Miller, when wife, Cynthia, playing with Tony Clement, had her first hole in one after playing golf for many years. “It was a proper golf shot,” said an excited Cynthia, “The ball hit the green, bounced forward twice and rolled into the hole. I couldn’t believe it”. Nor could Adrian, who left the clubhouse later, delighted at Cynthia’s success, but with a slightly lighter wallet!
Cynthia and Tony went on to score 43 points and claimed fourth place on countback, ahead of Mike Woodward and Lally Gibson, with Mel Field and Corrina Bates taking sixth spot.
A great score of 44 points was only good enough for second place, Alan Smith and Kay Clarke had 25 points on the front nine, but a non-score at the 12th hole proved costly and they finished the back nine with 19 points, which meant they claimed third place. Jim Farmer and Issey Panton had a par at the 12th and 14th holes respectively for four points each and this proved decisive as their front nine holes scored twenty points and they returned in 24 to score 44 points and take second place.
The winners, shooting nothing higher than six shots on any hole and maintaining a very consistent score throughout their round including a birdie at the par 3 5th and seven pars, for an excellent score of 45 points, were Mike Bradbury and
