IT HAS has been a busy period for the Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club with three club matches within the space of a week - and with plenty of high spots to reflect on.
Each year the Seniors have entered the Somerset Seniors Rose Bowl competition but despite some near misses have failed to progress beyond the first round for nearly twenty years.
However, 2026 is different. Under the leadership of new captain Andy Flagg, the side travelled to Cricket St Thomas and came away with a convincing 3.5-1.5 victory. Flagg and Allen Cheney had a close contest before ending one up. Roger Parfitt and Shaun Goodwin romped home 6&4 while Martyn Cuer and Phil Winsley combined to win 2&1. Dave Josham and debutant Russell Beveridge halved their match and the only pair to go under were Chris Appleton and Alan Jones.
The Seniors’ second league match of the season saw them lose another close contest 3-2 away to Enmore. Flagg and Cheney again impressed with a 3&2 success with Josham and Paul Trigg showing fine form to win 5&3. Appleton and Anthony Gregory and Cuer and Winsley both lost 3&2 with Parfitt and Jones going under 3&1.
The first home social match of the season saw Fosseway win 4.5-1.5 against Whitley. Howard Nowell and Malcolm Tucker led the way with a convincing 8&6 victory, Steve and Pauline Brixey were equally impressive with a 5&4 success, Winsley and Rob Wells came out on top 4&2 while Cuer and Noel Chatfield were 3&1 victors. Graham Edgell and Trigg halved their contest while Gregory and Paul Ellis just came out the wrong side of a tight contest losing 2&1.
