THE Ladies Midweek Stableford at Mendip Golf Club was won by Edwina Willis with 31 points.
The Men’s Midweek Stableford in division 1 was won by Peter Graftom with 38 points, division 2 by Colin Wiltshire, also with 38 points, and division 3 went to Hugh Graham with 36 points.
The ladies played the Coronation Foursomes in wet and windy conditions, with the winning pair of Dee Garnsworthy and Karen Cookson scoring a fine 36 points, beating Jenny Merrett and Edwina Willis who had 35 points. Dee and Karen now go forward to the Area Finals at Yeovil Golf Club on July 14.
The Seniors held the annual ‘Seniors Captains Drive In’. With a full field of 124 players playing a Texas scramble, the winning team were Simon Brand, Richard Bull, Nick Parfitt & Gary Quin with a fine score of 54!
New Seniors Captain Paul Godwin is raising money for ‘Teenage Cancer Trust’ this year with a variety of fund-raising ideas, including the return of the ‘Bonus Ball’ and a unique ‘Golf Ball Donation’ idea.
On a mixed afternoon with sunny spells and a cool breeze,Mendip Seniors travelled to Cumberwell Park for their fourth friendly outing of the year. After a resounding away win at Clevedon last week, they were brought back down to earth by a very strong home team.
Cumberwell Park has just returned to "play the ball as it lies" and despite a number of unpredictable "mud balls" this could not excuse the Mendip Seniors going down to a score of 5-1. Congratulations to Paul Wood & Steven Ball who experienced the sweet taste of success by winning their match and thus avoiding a whitewash.
For the rest of the Mendip Seniors the only sweet taste was the delicious sticky toffee pudding that was served as desert.
Meanwhile, Mendip A continued their positive start to the season on Sunday in awful conditions, weather not course. A 3-2 win (8pts to 6pts). Wins for Spencer Pocock & Ben Park, Mark.
Avalon C narrowly lost away 3/2 at Minehead. Winning pairs were Craig Robertson & David Goldie, & Rich Clifford & Cliff Hall. Losing pairs were Mal Srawley & Chris Butland, Darren Darby-Jones & Pete Grafton, and James Darby-Jones & Olly Frost, making his debut.
The Alliance A team played Knowle at home. Mendip’s first match in division 1 resulted in a draw, 7-7. There were wins for Lena Warren, FranDavies and Maureen Charlton, with a half for Lynne Vowles.
The Alliance B team played their first match of the season against Saltford B. The team was Carol King, Pauline Young, Fran Davies,Maureen Charlton, Gill Lowen, Jenny Merrett and Lally Gibson. The result was Mendip 12, Saltford 2.
An away tie is never easy, and the Mendip Seniors Somerset Rose Bowl team played away at Clevedon. They battled hard to win but ended up losing 4-1 with three of the matches going to the 18th. Two of these matches lost by one hole and the other by two holes.
Tildee Rocker-Cook, a 12 year old junior girl member, playedin the 'Robert Rock Junior Tour' at The Caversham Golf Club in Surrey.
Tildee won just her second event on the Tour by three shots, shooting a gross 88, nett 64. With this win, Tildee has qualified to play in the Robert Rock Tour Final at The Belfry during the DP World Tour British Masters.
