The weather at last relented and allowed the twice-postponed Stan Brown Cup competition to take place in the Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club.
A dazzling outward gross score of 35 from the in-form Barry Dugmore saw he and his partner, Brian Phelps, make the early running in the four-ball better ball event, but despite an impressive final nett total of 55, they were ultimately beaten on countback by the pairing of Graham Edgell and secretary, Alan Jones. One shot behind in third place were Alan White and John Waters.
The opening rounds of the Seniors’ Championship for the Rupert Moore Trophy have taken place. There were four matches in the Preliminary Round, with Jones beating Waters at the 19th hole; Malcolm Tucker beat Terry Button; and there were victories for the Curtis brothers with Jack beating Mike Ricketts at the last hole, and Reg beating Frank Reeves. Family bragging rights will be at stake in the first round, with the Curtis brothers meeting head-to-head, while Tucker will play Jones.
The rest of the matches were first-round contests. Captain, Gerry Rowell, beat Bill Lester at the last hole; Dugmore continued his good run beating Cyril Blacker; White won the battle of the low-handicappers with a convincing victory over Pat Cray, while Allen Cheney beat Winter League finalist, John Williams. Competition Secretary, Phelps, beat Treasurer, Geoff Hallett, while in the Final match, Edgell beat Ken Tucker.
