Good weather and excellent playing conditions greeted the 121 players at Mendip Golf Club when the annual running of the Jim Jeffrey Putter Medal event took place. Division Three was won by John Treeby, with net 69, followed by Abe Fukuyama, with 71, beating Ron Payne on countback. Division Two saw victory and a welcome return to form for Nigel Hill, with a fine 67, with David Golledge second, with 69 again on countback from Terry Scriven.

Divison One saw some excellent scoring with twelve players equalling or bettering par. In third place was Sam Reilly, one of four players to card net 69, in second position was David Burr, with net 67, and losing on countback to Captain Elect, David Williams. David, in turn, lost the overall competition by the finest of margins, again after countback. The winner of the event was Liam Robertson, handicap 21, but now reduced to nineteen.

The Mendip Ladies friendly team played away to Worlebury and secured an honourable half. The course had stood up well to two days of heavy rain and breezy, sunny conditions prevailed. Wins were secured by Mary Ware and Mary Ainsworth and Di Stanton and Chris Williams, with Anita Butcher and Carol Mosley halving their match.

The Ladies B Team in the Alliance went to promotion rivals, Knowle, and gained an extremely valuable and hard-fought half. There were wins for Edwina Willis, Lynn Cox, Chris Olds and a half gained by Linda Brobson. A strong finish to the season could yet bring promotion.

The Seniors entertained local rivals, Wells, and went down to a surprising heavy defeat by ½–6½. As Seniors Captain, Geoff Mosley, stated, “A bad day at the office!” Mendip’s sole half point was gained by Doug Thompson and Ron Irons.
