The annual running of the Anniversary Cup attracted 120 entrants. Scoring was competitive, and the top scores were all ahead of the CSS for the day.

Winning Division Three with a net 70 was Gary Butler, followed by Peter Walsh with 71, who in turn beat Paul Drew on count back. Division Two saw a win for Trevor Oats with a net 69, and he beat Steven Morris on count back, with Andrew Wells third with 71. Division One saw Kevin Mattock third with 71, Club Captain Richard Jeffrey second with 70, and Wayne Srawley winning with 69. However, the Cup was won by Wayne’s father Malcolm, from Division Two, who carded a fine net 68.

A second Men’s competition, the Jim Jeffrey Putter event, saw 100 competitors play in testing conditions. Division Three went to Nigel Brokenshire with a 69, well clear of second-placed John Hargraves on 76, and Chris Huzall on 77. Division Two went to Dan Allen on 70, with Aaron Mitchell second on 71. Division One saw the ever-consistent three-handicapper Tom Lowe in third place with 72, with Chris Lindley second with 69, beaten on count back by Nick Cox, who now sees his handicap drop to four. However, the best of the 69s, after count backs, came from long-standing member Gary Lineman, from Division Two, and he holds the Trophy for the next twelve months.

The Ladies’ weekly competition fell victim to the heavy rain, although the Saturday Ladies played in the Challenge Cup – aptly named, bearing in mind the weather. This saw a win for Sarah James with a net 80, and Chris Down second with 87.

In a field smaller than normal due to holiday commitments, eleven Past Lady Captains, plus the Current Lady Captain, played for the Past Captain’s Trophy, with the event being won by Elaine Richardson with 32, just beating Edwina Willis with 31. Following the event as usual, the evening turned into a very social occasion.

27 Lady members supported Patricia Rawlins in her Lady Captain’s away day held at Knowle. In a change from normal procedures, Ladies were able to select their own teams of three to play in a Bowmaker Stableford, where there were bonus points if you were the player holding the yellow ball – no pressure then! The winning team of Eileen Masters, Wendy Norman and Elaine Richardson scored 104 points, while second were Jinhee Page, Sue Needham and Dee Garnsworthy with 103. Again, a very enjoyable evening followed the golf, and all agreed that Patricia had put on an excellent event for them.

In reporting Seniors’ affairs, firstly an apology. It has been pointed out that in the recent match against local rivals Wells, the final score was 4-3, not 5-2 as reported. I apologize. Still, a win is a win! Mendip Member, Ian Perkins, was recently awarded full County Colours by Somerset, following ten appearances in the Seniors’ County Team. This is the second player this season to receive this honour, with Peter Davies gaining his earlier in the season.

In their latest event, the Seniors entertained Kingsdown and recorded yet another win, this time 4-2. Successful for Mendip were Henry Banks/Jim Mallon, Derek Bellew/Geoff Mosley, Kevin Carmody/Nick Inskip, and Kee Wah Low/John Brooksbank.
