The competitive season at Mendip is slowly winding down, as the competitions become less frequent and the matches are nearly finished.
The Men this week held their Centenary Trophy event, a four-man team affair that attracted an entry of over 100 players. Third position saw a return to winning ways for the long-standing, and very experienced, team of veterans Brian Francis, Eric Jordan, Brian Smith and M Garner who scored 83 points. In Second place were Ben Cox, Tom Lowe, Jack Hayes and Mervyn Vaughan with 86, but clear winners were Wayne Srawley, D. Allen, Paul Reakes and H. Phillips, with 91 points.
The Ladies’ event was the medal event, the Barbara Jose Trophy. Difficult scoring conditions saw CSS rise to 78. The Copper Division was won by Wendy Norman with a net 83, and she was followed by Allison Rumming and Elaine Richardson. Bronze Division went to Chris Atkinson with a best-of-the-day score of 77, with Nichola Croft second with 79, and Bron Cooper in third place. Winner of the Silver Division was Aimee Sawyer with 80, with Marian Speed second with 82, and Ladies’ Captain Patricia Rawlins third with 83.
The annual challenge match between the Seniors and the Ladies took place, and as always this was a most enjoyable and very competitive affair. Henry Banks, the Seniors Captain, hosted the event, and laid on glorious sunshine but also a strong wind to test the players. The eventual outcome was a win for the Seniors 5-2. Victorious for the Ladies were Patricia Rawlins/Marian Speed and Sue Needham/Allison Rumming, with the Seniors’ wins coming from John Padfield/Simon Atkinson, Keith Gadsden/Nick Inskip, Rob Needham/Martin Lambert, Julian Rawlins/Merlyn Saunders and Norman Squire/John Stembridge.
