The rain has returned with a vengeance, falling continuously for 24 hours and showing no signs of letting up. However, last week, regular play at Mendip continued, with the Ladies holding a Bowmaker event. 36 competitors completed the nine-hole event.

In a tightly-fought contest Liz Rose, Eileen Masters and Wendy Norman came out on top with 37 points, but only after a count back. In second place came Chris Down, Anita Butcher and Elaine Kitchenham, with Chris Olds, Joan Clark and Margaret Hawker third with 36 points.

On Friday, the Seniors held their first competition of the year, despite some very heavy hail storms. 61 competed with all but three completing their rounds. Andy Frampton, Seniors’ Captain, decided that this would be a ‘three clubs and a putter’ event, and this decision was well received and in reality made little difference to the scores!

Why do we carry fourteen clubs, you may well ask? Division One was won by John Ellis, believe it or not playing in shorts, with 38 points, with Adrian Brooking-Clark second with 37, and Chris Charles third with 35. Division Two saw a win for Adam Spragg with an excellent 39 points, just beating Simon Atkinson with 38 points. John Treeby was third with 34 points after a triple count back. The best Veteran Prize went to Alan Evans-Jones with 33 points.

Mendip regarded themselves very fortunate early in 2017 when new Professional, Stuart Disney, arrived. He came with an excellent reputation from his past County, Devon, as an outstanding Teaching Pro and Mendip and its Members have been delighted with the progress made in that aspect of the Club. Stuart is well supported, with his wife Suzanne running the Shop together with James Taylor who has been associated with the Club since he was a very young Junior.

Recently Stuart has been appointed as the Lead Coach for Somerset Junior Girls. Stuart has previous experience in this field, having previously coached Devon County Girls over an eight-year period. Stuart is delighted to take up this new role and from Mendip’s perspective, feels that this will help him build upon his junior coaching programme at the Club and will also help him with his schools involvement programme.
