96 played in Mendip’s Jock Callaghan Cup event, which despite excellent playing conditions, saw only three players recording scores in the 60s.

Winning Division Three was Paul Drew with 70, followed by Owen Cullen with 71 and Freddie Lenihan with 74.

Division Two was won by Richard Gumbleton with the equal best score of the day 68, Stephen Creese was second with 69 and Hugh Glanfield was third with 70 after countback. Division One went to Trevor Foster with 70, Brian Say was second with 71 after a four-way countback, leaving Chris Roe third. However the Cup went to five-handicapper, George Hobbs, with a fine 68, winning on countback.

The Mid-Week Tankard saw another good entry. Adrian Payne won Division One with 36 points, beating Jonathan Beech on countback, with Richard Salter third with 35, again after countback. Division Two was won by Lee John Moore with a fine 39, beating Chris White who also carded 39, with Rani Manjaneda third with 37. Terry Purnell won Division Three, with Jim Mallon second and Steve Turner third.

The Men’s Avalon B Team visited Wheathill and lost a closely-fought match, 2-3. There were wins for Liam Robertson/David Williams and Richard Clifford/James Herniman. The Pro Shop Nearest the Pin this week went to John Ellis, with Ellen Reakes second and Chris Butland third.

The Ladies welcomed new Junior Member, nine-year-old Ffion Richardson, who played in the Ladies’ weekend stableford. In challenging conditions, Ffion scored a fine 35 points. Ffion’s family recently moved to the West Country from Liverpool. She is part of the Somerset Junior Girls’ Coaching programme and is regarded as having a very bright future in golf.

The Ladies played their annual Coronation Foursomes event – not everyone’s favourite format, but thoroughly enjoyed by the fourteen pairings that competed. There was a triple tie for second place with 31 points, with Val Dixon/Diane Stevenson beating Daphne Irons/Carol Mosley and June Page/Hilary Rowdon on countback. However, a point better saw a win for Liz Rose/Diane Stanton.

The Ladies’ Friendly Team visited Worlebury and came away with a creditable 2-2 halved match. Winning for Mendip were Team Captain, Allison Rumming/Sue Needham, with Gina Howard/Carol Mosley and Sandie Roper/Susy Ruskin gaining halves.

The Seniors’ Avalon Team played away at Tall Pines, who took full advantage of their home course knowledge, beating Mendip 4-1. Mendip’s winning pair were Terry Carter/Jim Scott. When the Seniors visited Clevedon again they found the opposition too strong, losing 1-6. Jim Scott registered another win for Mendip, this time partnered by Walford Gillison who was making his debut for the Senior Team.

Mendip Seniors’ losing run continued when they visited Burnham, always a difficult course to play for visiting teams, this time losing 2½-4½ – some consolation for Burnham, who lost to Mendip recently in the Seniors’

Somerset KO Cup event. Mendip’s winners were Mike Lill/Peter Rumming, with Seniors’ Captain, Bryan Lewis/Kevin Carmody, Andy Frampton/Andy Griffiths and Mike Snaith/John Brooksbank all gaining halves.

Finally, Mendip’s recent Open Day event was voted a great success with a large number of non-members; both young and old attending. Several joined on the day, with others expressing interest in so doing and Stuart’s Get into Golf sessions, based on families joining together, created a lot of interest and the current sessions are now full.
