Mendip’s player of the week is Aimee Sawyer. Having entered many amateur competitions all over the UK this year, Amy recently played in the English Women’s Stroke Play event at Purdis Heath, Ipswich.

Against a SSS of 76 each day, Aimee recorded 75, 72, 74 and 73. She finished 13th out of a field of over 100 and more importantly, sees her handicap reduce to Scratch. Very well done, Amy – probably the first Mendip lady to achieve this mark!

The Men’s Coronation Cup had 104 entrants and again witnessed an outstanding round by the winner. Division Three was won by Owen Cullen with 67, Brian Francis was second with 75 and Paul Drew third with 76. Division Two went to Darren Lodge with 69, while Liam Robertson was second with 70 on countback from Craig Richardson.

Division One was won by Stefan Golledge with 67, Wayne Black was second with 68 and Stephen Davis was third with 69. However, the outstanding winner was Ryan Sainsbury with a two-under-Gross score of 69, meaning a net-64, and he wins the Coronation Cup for 2019.

The Avalon C Team beat Mendip Spring, 4-1, with wins for Tom Chapman/Phil Leadbeater, Duncan Offer/Malcolm Srawley, Paul Reakes/Tony Logan and Tom Lowe/Scott Butland. They then visited Wedmore and went down to a narrow 2-3 defeat. This time, there were wins for Tom Chapman/Julian Redpath and Chris Butland/Paul Reakes.

The Ladies held a 4BBB event this week which saw a win for Ellen Reakes and Philippa Brown with 38 points, with Ladies’ Captain, Marian Speed/Fran Davies second with 35 and Bron Cooper/Jan Fukuyama third, also with 35. The Ladies’ Corson Cup saw a win for Edwina Willis, who beat Chris Down in the Final.

The Seniors’ annual running of the Bill Freeman Trophy produced a popular, if unexpected winner. Long-term veteran, Brian Francis, was well-used to winning events in days gone by, but in recent times not so. However, he produced an excellent round of 41 to lift the Trophy this year in a close-run affair. David Pilbeam, John Murphy and Alan Williams were only one shot adrift with David securing second place on countback.

The Seniors’ most recent match resulted in a 3-3 halved affair when entertaining our local friends from Wells. Bryan Lewis/Byron Osborn and Steve Cox/Colin Davies gained wins, with Brian Say/John Brooksbank and Norman Squire/Peter Rumming halving their matches.

There have been two nine-hole Junior Competitions, with Daisy Jeffrey winning the first with 18 points, beating Ffion Richardson and Ashton Silk, who both scored 17. Daisy then followed this up winning the second event with an excellent 24 points.

The Club Millington Salver Mixed event saw a win for Ffion Richardson and her father with 44 points, just beating the low-handicap pairing of Jo Espley and Ian Perkins, who scored 43 points. Daisy Jeffrey, playing with another Junior, Tom Richardson, were third with 42 points.

Nearest the Pin this week went to Malcolm Srawley, with John Ellis second and Andy Griffiths third.
