Whilst these are indeed very difficult times for us all, at least as golfers we are, for the time being at least, able to continue with our sport.
Mendip this past week saw plenty of action on the fairways with everyone getting used to the additional safety measures whilst on the course.
Mendip has inevitably had to close the Clubhouse facilities, but with the new measures in place, which have been carefully thought through by Stuart Disney and the Professional Team, Richard Gregory and the Greens Team and with the implementation overseen by Club Chairman, Rob Needham, play is continuing apace and made all the more enjoyable with the sun shining at last.
The Ladies held an 18 Individual Stableford event which, in the circumstances, was well supported. Silver Division was won by Chris Olds, with 31 points, with Anita Butcher, second, with 27 and Margaret Allen, third, with 25. Bronze Division went to the new Ladies’ Captain, Anne Collins, with 32, with Joan Clark second, with 25 and Sandie Roper third, with 24.
Copper Division was won by Ann Padley, with 31, Pauline Williams was second with 24, beating Allison Rumming on countback.
The first Mid-Week Stableford took place with a good entry. Division One was won by Martin Myers with 35 points, with Jonathan Beech second with 33.
Division Two went to Terry Carter, with 32, beat- ing Chris White on count back.
Division Three was won by Steve Turner, with 35 with the new Men’s Captain, James Boyce in second with 31. Alongside the 18 hole event ran a 9 hole qualifier which was won by Sam Scriven with 20 points, Tom Chapman was second with 19 on countback from Philip Leadbeater.
The Pro Shop Nearest the Pin event went to John Stembridge, with Mark
Necker second and Paul Griffiths third.
The Seniors went ahead with their first singles event of the season and despite all the concerns being expressed about the ‘oldies’, seventy Seniors took part.
Division One went to Steve Davis, with an excellent 36 points, but only after countback from Alan O’Leary, with a very young looking senior, Jusin Barrow, in third on 35 points after another countback.
Division Two was won by John Treeby, with 35 points and John Roper, second with 33, after countback from James Boyce. However, the big winner on the day was Paul Apfelstedt, who gained the only two spot, bringing him the whole pot of £64!
