This year’s Ladies Club Championships at Mendip always had the promise of being an exciting affair.
Defending Champion, Aimee Sawyer (+4) has recently returned after nearly a year off following her horrific accident. So inspirational just to be playing again at this level.
With the course in splendid order and set up as it should be for a Championship, Aimee took the honours on day one with a gross 82, one shot better than Ellen. Jinhee Page, playing with the front two, kept in touch with 89.
On day two, Aimee was still ahead by one shot after 15 holes, but dropped shots on 16 and 18 to finish with another 82. Ellen, however, finished strongly with a birdie on 16 and pars on 17 and 18 to finish with a 79 which gave her overall victory by two shots. Jinhee Page fought off a challenge from another youngster, Ffion Richardson, to retain third place. Suffice to say the Net Winner was 13-year-old Connie Cox. Well done to all who took part in this great event.
Mendip hosted a very successful Seniors Open Team event with 111 competitors, less than a dozen were Mendip members.
Winners overall, with 83 points, were Harold Leadbitter and Peter Clark playing with Mendip member, Peter Rumming. They won the first visitor/member prize. First visitors’ prize went to a combined team from Ludlow/Maidenhead/Bigbury with 78. The Men’s Mid Week Stableford saw 65 competitors. Best score was an excellent 41 points from Rob Crew and he was one of only three players who bettered par demonstrating, once again how difficult the course is playing this season. Bryan Lewis was second with 38 points and Steve Chivers was third with 37. Terry Carter was the best of three players who scored 36 points.
The Ladies held an Arizona Shuffle event which had forty entrants which was very good bearing in mind ten of the ‘regulars’ were away playing in a mixed event at High Post. The winning score came from Dee Garnsworthy/Karen Cookson/Diane Stanton/Val Dixon with 73 points.
The Seniors’ annual running of the Bill Freeman Trophy attracted a strong entry of 106 players. Four players managed to break par with the winner being Club President, Tony Taylor who scored an excellent 39 points. Tony Williams
