MENDIP Golf Club’s men’s Avalon C team enjoyed a fine win over Minehead 3½-1½, points gained by Malcolm Srawley/Craig Robertson, Scott & Chris Butland, Gary Quin/Clive Copp and with a half from Kevin Brimble/Tony Logan. However, they were heavily beaten when visiting Fosseway, which is a difficult place to pick up points.
The Avalon A team suffered their first loss of the season when visiting Worlebury, the combination of home advantage together with having to give a lot of shots to the higher handicapped opponents proved a little to much. Mendip’s point came from Jack Cook,, on his team debut playing with Clayton Merrett. However, the team bounced back when playing Worlebury at home, 3-2; wins from Rod Edney/Paul Lewis, Tom Chapman/Spencer Pocock and Dan Allen/Jack Cook
The Ladies Reid Trophy saw a win for Sue Alcock with 39 points. Div 1 went to Lynne Vowles with 38 points with Jo Espley 2nd with 36 and Div 2 was won by Susan Forshaw with 38 with Chris Williams 2nd with 37.The Ladies Alliance A team went down to a 4-10 defeat when visiting Saltford with wins coming from Maureen Charlton and Pauline Young. However, this was not a bad effort bearing in mind that Mendip’s top three ladies were away on county duty.
Mendip’s Aimee Sawyer, Ellen Reakes and Libby Dezis were all part of the Somerset county team competing in the annual South West Counties event held at East Devon. They all contributed good points from their matches and Somerset enjoyed a fine win overall and now progress as the South West Championships to compete in the National Finals.
Twelve pairs played in the latest Social Golf evening, a 9 hole, 2 ball, Texas Scramble which saw a win for Suzie Howe and Tony Logan with a net 34 after count back from Chris Howerd and daughter Harper.
The Seniors visited Bridport and although several of the matches finished on the 18th they went down to a 2-4 defeat. Successful for Mendip were Gary Quin / Simon Atkinson and Phil Bendall/Philip Bissett. However, later in the week they entertained Tidworth and won 5-2 so taking a healthy lead into the reverse fixture playing for the Tidworth Trophy. Wins for Mendip came from Andy Humphries & Paul Morgan, who was making his debut for the team, Darrin Vowell & Henry Banks, Gary Quin & John Scott, Steve Davis & Simon Atkinson and Mike Snaith & John Shakesby.
The Seniors Avalon team returned to winning ways when entertaining Mendip Spring, winning 3-2; successful for Mendip were David Braithwaite/Tony Scott, Richard Bull/Kevin Carmody and David Golledge/John Stembridge. Representing Mendip Spring was the ever competitive ex-world darts Champion, Bob, the Limestone Cowboy, Anderson.
A full start sheet saw a very successful Mendip Seniors Open 3 Person Bowmaker event. Of the 90 entrants the vast majority were visitors, which is as it should be. The first visitors prize went to a Long Ashton/Bristol & Clifton team with 77 points. The 2nd visitors prize went to a team from Broadstone with 73 and the 3rd prize went to team from Bath with 71. Best home score of 80 came from Jim Boyd playing with visitors Andrew Snook and Phil Toogood and in 2nd place came David Braithwaite, David Jukes and Tony Scott with 77.
