THE men's Captains Day at Mendip Golf Club, playing a ‘Vegas Stableford’ in teams of four, with the players score on each hole chosen by the roll of a dice, created much talk in the clubhouse.

The winners were Mark Smith, Colin Wiltshire, Richard Connock and Trevor Messenger on 45 points.

The July Mid-Week Stableford attracted 69 players with the winner being Farquhar Ogilvie with 40 points, followed by Kevin Carmody with 39 points.

Nineteen attended the annual Past Captains event with ages ranging from 34-94. The coveted trophy was won by John Shakesby on the back 9 with 40 points from Colin Davies.

The Ladies Centenary Plate was won by the in-form Julia Phillips with a net 69, closely followed by Sandra Hares, Maureen Charlton and Susan Forshaw, all nett 70.

The July Mid-Week Stableford was won by Debbie Godwin with 41 points on countback from Annette Jobbins.

Eight seniors travelled to Enmore to compete in The Enmore Stag, a team competition with four pairs playing 4BBB. The Mendip team scored a very credible 154 points which placed them 5th out of 14 teams.

The Alliance B team played at home to Henbury on Monday, July 20, the result being Mendip 5 points, Henbury 9.

The Alliance A team, short of some of their stars, faced a strong Henbury team at home. Only one match was halved by Ellen Reakes. The other players fought hard but were up against it as they faced opponents with handicaps 7 or 8 shots lower than them.

Mendip Ladies entertained Mendip Spring in an ICL Match on July 27. The weather was perfect for golf, not too hot and not too windy. The course was playing well, and Mendip gained a 7-0 win.

Commiserations to Jenny Ahlberg and Linda Papadopoullos, who having got through to the sixth round of the Daily Mail Foursomes, played at home against Taunton & Pickeridge. The match was lost on the 16th with a birdie from the opposing team.

Friendly Match number 26 for Mendip Seniors saw them welcome Saltford in a return match in one of the few fixtures involving seven pairings. In an even match where the team average Handicap Index was less than one shot (18.0 to 17.1) home advantage prevailed and Mendip ran out 4.5-2.5 winners.

The away fixture, held back in April, ended 3.5-3.5, so this result gave Seniors captain Paul Godwin another satisfying aggregate victory of 8-6.

Mendip Seniors took on the Isle of Wedmore for their first meeting this season. On their home course not only were the hot weather conditions challenging but also that of the performance of the home team as Mendip left Wedmore with a bruising 1-5 defeat. Much to do then in the return fixture in September.

Men's club champion Daniel Owen came close to defending his title for the Dartmoor Trophy at the South West Mid-Amateur at Exeter. Daniel finished runner up after a three-man play-off.

Junior captain Libbie Dezis competed in the English Girls U18 Championship at Prestbury. A consistent performance ensured Libbie made the cut and finished 27th from a field of 144.

Aimee Sawyer and Frankie Dezis played in the Walton Heath Trophy (Jill Thornhilll Rose) with Frankie scoring 295 (1 under par) for the four rounds, finishing seventh and Aimee finishing with 312 and in 18th place.
