The annual Berkeley Hall Foursomes Medal took place at Mendip Golf Club last week. In third place, with net 70.5, were Simon Grant and David Cox, just beaten by Paul Reakes and Mervyn Vaughan, with net seventy. However, clear winners this year, with a fine net 66, were Trevor Messenger and Simon Jefferies.

The Men’s Avalon B Team defeated Cricket St Thomas, 4½–1½ to keep up their excellent run of results. Points for Mendip came from Duncan Offer/Mervyn Vaughan, Shaun and Liam Robertson, Martin Honeybun/Rich Clifford, Trevor Oats/Rich Gumbleton and a fighting half from James Herniman/Team Captain, Ian Stolworthy, who fought back from being four down at one stage.

The Ladies held a Qualifying Stableford in damp conditions, but they completed their rounds before the heavy rain arrived. Silver Division was won on countback by Marian Speed, with Edwina Willis, second, both with 32 points, and Liz Rose third with thirty. The Bronze Division was won by Sandie Roper, with a fine 36 points, with Anne Collins second with 33 and Margaret Hawker third with 31. The Copper Division was won by Kay O’Connor with Wendy Norman second and Elaine Richardson third. The weekend stableford was won by Sue McFerran.

The Ladies Alliance A Team, with four of their regular players unavailable, went down to a heavy defeat when playing a strong Bristol and Clifton Team. Halves were gained by Jinhee Page and Team Captain, Marian Speed. The Ladies’ Inter Club Team visited Minehead and after some very close matches eventually went down 2½–4½. Wins for Mendip came from Hilary Rowdon and Margaret Hawker, with a half from Libby Bellew.

The Seniors played the first leg of their annual fixture against Tidworth, losing on this occasion, 1½–6½. Mendip points came from Rod Dyson/Peter Rumming, with a half gained by Martin Osborne/John Brooksbank. There remains a lot of work to be done if Mendip are to retain the Trophy this year.

The Ladies held their Championship this weekend, played over two days. Day One saw three handicapper, Aimee Sawyer, leading the way, but only by one shot from five handicapper, Gill Brown; both women were well clear of the remainder of the field. Day Two saw Aimee clinch the Championship, with an 82 in the second round. Gill ended runner-up, following her 87 in Round Two.

The Net Trophy saw a win for Sarah James following net rounds of 76 and 83, just beating off the challenge from Jinhee Page who carded two rounds of eighty.
